Looking up the board…

Settings

First, where your hands want the line: blocks fall with no line drawn and no sound, and you tap where your thumbs already are. Then a click track works out how late your taps land, so the song can shift to meet them. Both of those move where the line is for you — how big the Perfect zone is never changes, so it means the same thing on every phone. Then you try it and choose whether to keep it. Nothing is saved until you say so.

Every finished run goes on the board for that song, so you can see how you compare with everyone else playing. It sends the name and face the game made up for you and the score — nothing else, no account, and nothing that says who you are. Tap a song to see where you stand before you play it.

Little pops and chimes as you play — a tap, a caught star, a streak catching fire. They are mixed to sit under the music rather than fight it, so they start on; slide it to nothing if you would rather just have the song.

How to play

Tiles fall. Tap each one before it reaches the bottom.

TapHit the block itself, not the track. The nearer its base is to the line, the better.
HoldA long tile. Press and keep your finger down until it has gone by. It brightens as you hold it.
›››
SlideArrows mean swipe. Press it, then drag sideways the way they point. A dashed outline shows how far — the tile lights up as you get there.
Two at onceTiles that glow pink come in pairs, on the song's big accents. Use two fingers — one each.
RunA gold edge and a joined-up chain mean a burst of quick taps. Get ready before it arrives.
Gold starGrab it for extra points and a bigger multiplier for a few seconds — even past the usual ceiling. Missing one costs you nothing at all: no combo lost, no run ended.

Every song wears a badge for how fast it plays — a snail is gentle, a bolt is steady, a flame is fierce. Normal on a fierce song is honest work, so the chips under the search box let you pick the kind you fancy.

There are two modes, picked under the difficulty on the home screen. In Survival one miss ends the run — tapping an empty lane counts too — but a long streak banks a continue that saves you once. In Points you always reach the end, there are no continues, and a long streak pushes your multiplier past ×4 all the way to ×6. Each mode keeps its own high scores.

Your streak and what it is worth sit together in the middle of the screen: the count, and the × multiplier it has earned. Catching a gold star lifts that multiplier for a few seconds — the badge turns gold while it lasts. Break the streak and you watch both of them fall off the screen. Get to 25 in a row and you are on fire: the tiles start glowing and embers come down the screen.

Letting go of a hold early, or not swiping a slide, only ever breaks your combo. Fill the three stars by playing accurately.

There are three of them and then two more rungs above. Play a song almost flawlessly and your three stars turn platinum. Play one with every single tap Perfect and you get the crown. Both are kept once you have them.

Tap the + on a song card to add it to your playlist, at the top of the screen. The first one is where you start; you can move songs up and down, take one out, and each song plays straight on from the results card. A room works the same way — the host builds the playlist and after a couple of rounds a league table shows who is winning overall.

Tap when the base of the block reaches the line. The bottom edge of every block is lit for exactly that reason — it is the edge that gets judged, not the block. The glowing band either side of the line is the Perfect zone: anywhere in it counts as Perfect, and the nearer the line you land the more the block is worth, so the line is the one to aim at.

In settings, Calibrate plays a short level with nothing to lose and just watches you tap along. Where your taps land moves the whole song to match your speakers, so the beat arrives exactly as a block touches the line, and it moves the line itself up to where your thumbs already sit. It never changes the size of the Perfect zone: that is the same for everybody, so a league table is comparing the same thing on every phone.

Tap your name to pick a face — 48 of them, or one of the music symbols the other games use.

Tap a song and you get your best on it, your stars, and where that puts you against everyone else playing — then Play. The results card shows the same board again once your run has changed it. Boards are per song, per difficulty and per mode.

Hit 25 in a row and you are on fire — the tiles start to glow. Keep it up and they burn brighter.
